about

I have been a student and admirer of drone music for what seems like ages now. To me, drone in all its forms is sustaining, deep, and immersive.; more complex and important than may be gathered upon first listen. My deepest understanding of drones came about when studying early music - hearing the underpinning and soul of sacred and secular works tied together with a unifying and solemn chord/note - the beauty in the sustain. This was influenced to a greater degree when studying Arabic taksim (solos), the drone and held notes of an ensemble or player could inspire emotional, melodic flourishes from a soloist - original and cathartic runs - never to be played of the same artistic fervor twice over.

My Khidirpur project is about this place - where beauty and chance collide in harmonic cadence - held together by ghost notes, sustain, decay and reverberated space. I wanted this project to reflect the soul of historical drone in a modern setting - what better location to serve as this “instrument” of creation than India - the original life-blood of early drone.

This project is an accumulation of this vision, as well as my experience and time travelling in north and central India. It is collage music - if you will - a combination of field recordings, textural guitar, Indian strings, dissected drone, vinyl, noise, and ambient sound.

"The Sadness of Matia Mahal" marks the first step in the journey of the Khidirpur sound. Inspired by the vibrant yet sorrowful memory of the Old Delhi Street that unveils shadows and wonder in equal measure... a sullen tone permeates every sonic layer.
